Slow progress is still progress

I have dabbled a bit more with Tales of Hearts R.  After making it to the main continent, I hit a 30-trope pileup.  More discussion after the jump.

The first town I made it to on the main continent was one that had been hit by despair.  However, the knights went and solved it, so it wasn't too bad.  However, this town was, sigh, a hot springs resort.  Cue wacky shenanigans that involved Kor looking into the women's side and getting branded a pervert.  However, the church knights had Kohaku's spirit core, so there was some dialogue where well-meaning people talked past each other.  Fortunately, there was a dungeon shortcut so the party could catch up with the knights.

The woman who was cured originally seemed to be in love with the knight that cured her...but it didn't turn out that way!  She couldn't stop thinking about him because he had a ridiculous bowl-haircut.  Well played, Tales of Hearts R.  Well played.

The dungeon was where the group got the Sorcerer's Ring.  A Tales series tradition, the Sorcerer's Ring allows the party to interact with unusual aspects of the dungeon to solve puzzles.  I'm not sure how far it goes back, but I've seen it since Tales of Symphonia; it's hard for me to get excited about it.

After the dungeon and the ambush on the church knights, the group ended up in the capital city.  In a shocking series of events, it turned out that the military and the church are at odds.  It's like a return to European History class!  While the military is not portrayed particularly well, the church doesn't come out very well either.  The head of the church is trying to use his son (the bowl-haircut church knight) to influence the Queen.

There was a quick journey to a town that I'll call fantasy Venice since it had canals and the group needed to be transported by gondolas.  The peaceful, charming woman in one of the villa was stricken by despair and tried to wipe it out by sabotaging the dam.  Naturally, the party stopped that and recovered Kohaku's shard.  Said peaceful, charming woman turned out to the be Queen.

Following one of the trails led us to Arena Combat town, where there was a fighting tournament.  Sigh.  Going up a tower for the contest, the previous champion used his rules lawyer-fu and simply rode his airship up to the top.  A fight with him ended up having Kohaku get her groove back and become a party member.

I believe that this guy is nigh-invulnerable when he's blasting.  A shout out for whoever gets that reference.

After this, the group ended up getting a ride with the previous champion in his airship.  Of course, they got drugged because they're chumps.

The party ended up in one of the military's bases where Megaman is being studied.  The group does something to activate him, but they are rescued by the freakishly strong merchant woman (who joined as a party member around the excursion to the capital city).

I stopped during the breakout.  I imagine that Megaman will show up to save the party at some point.  He is on the cover, after all.
